The Ketogenic or Keto diet has gotten A LOT of media coverage in the last few years. I decided to follow up my original Keto video with one where I actually try out the diet for myself.

I was not surprised that the keto diet was difficult to stick to because of the restrictive nature of it. However, the weight loss and other benefits were definitely noticed and fairly early on into the diet.

Hi Dr. Mike, I just saw this video again, and I would like to comment on a thing I think you missed in your research prior to starting the keto diet; you felt a lower level of energy when doing sports, but remember that when doing anaerobe exercise (things that makes you pant, and sweat) your body burns carbs, of which you only have minimal stores of (~200 calories in the liver, and a little in the muscle cells). This is to maintain an emergency store for danger situations, ie. if you need to run from a dangerous animal, etc. Our body burns carbs much faster, and this is awesome for an emergency. When doing aerobic exercises, ie exercises that require long sustained, but lower levels of calories, you can basically burn it at the same rate as you can create that energy from fat stores. I started out at almost 400 lbs, and went on Keto. After a month or so, I was losing weight, and I became fat adapted, and I could do 1-2 hour long walks, and it felt like I had unlimited energy. Then I would do a little HIIT on an exercise bike, and 5 mins would be devastating, I burned up my glocygen stores and I was spent… You are obviously in better shape that I am, so you can do better than me, but that's probably why you feel that you get tired quicker, when doing intensive sports.

  3. Was it really necessary to throw food into a trash bin? After you gave 2 thumbs down to an advice to spoil leftovers. I'm worried about perishable carbs that I have right now. Thrive Market seems to sell overpriced condiments and food with a lot of packaging weight, not bulky staple foods. I wonder how it is zero waste, and what do they do with overstocked items.

  4. Cutting carbs is the way to go….as a nurse it works for me. I lost 60 pounds over a 6-9 month time span. I will say….it will test your mind and ability to stay dedicated. I am not a doctor…..BUT! If you want to begin this diet and have a history of DM or anything endocrine wise please do consult with your primary. Keto can be done safely, but always check with the doc first folks!☺️ happy ketosis everyone❤️

  5. Keto isn’t “weird” it’s a modified version of what they actually used for people who suffered from epilepsy but being a doctor I’m sure you knew that! I’m also a nurse of 22 years and it’s worked for me 98lbs later and having a full understanding that it isn’t fully sustainable I modified it to more a keto “lite”, as for it to be sustainable. I get checked out twice a year with a full VO2 max and I’m 51 yrs old and I can happily say my numbers are incredible and my resting heart rate as MY doc said that of a 30 yr old. I do stay active with Jujitsu, rock climbing, surfing, hiking, but we all know the most important is the nutrition ! Thanks doc love your channel!

  6. Keto is not a diet its a lifestyle change 100 pounds gone in a year 3 years now have not gained one pound back never hungry but keto only works for weight loss if you fast everyday 16 hours eat only with in 8 hour window so again not a diet its A LIFESTYLE PERIOD

  7. just wondering, did you get a blood test before and after to see if it affected anything??? I did Keto for awhile, but I started to get nervous about the fat intake and if my body was actually burning it like Keto says it should…..

Keto isn't for everyone 😄I do something similar I cut out carbs ,sugar red meat ,bread first 2 weeks was hard but energy levels lifted for me due to having a thyroid problem I lost 2 stone in 2 months so happy to have my figure back I even started up hiking and biking never felt better definitely sticking to this one 😊

  9. I’ve been on a keto diet for 2 1/2 months. Dropped 25 lbs. The weakness and lack of endurance goes away eventually once your body adjusts after a couple of weeks. Stable energy all the time. No real cravings, you adjust. Super mental clarity after 6 weeks or so. Totally recommend as a permanent lifestyle.

  10. Keto is not for everyone, but what diet is? I found that on keto, or just low carbing, (no more than 100grams per day) I stopped suffering from heartburn, slept better and stopped snacking, also found that I could concentrate better
