Advocating for a Therapeutic Ketogenic Diet | Miriam Kalamian EdM MS CNS | TEDxSedona

You can’t hide from cancer. It touches every one of us in one way or another. While the march goes on to find a cure, over 4600 people a day – in the US alone- are handed a cancer diagnosis. What if you or a loved one become a statistic? And what if you learned that there was something you could do- right now- to take back some control? Enter the ketogenic diet. The concept of food as medicine is nothing new. What’s different now is that cancer research has given us a deeper appreciation of the changes that drive cancer at the cellular level. This information gives each of us the opportunity to shape indifference to diet into a new paradigm for cancer treatment that extends beyond clinic walls Miriam Kalamian is a nutrition consultant, educator, and author specializing in the implementation of ketogenic therapies. She earned her master of education (EdM) from Smith College and her master of human nutrition (MS) from Eastern Michigan University. She is board certified in nutrition (CNS) by the Board for Certification of Nutrition Specialists. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at

  1. I bet the FDA is gunning for her. She is a quack. Treating aggressive tumors with diet? Are you kidding me? She better not say Vitamin C cures scurvy. You think Big Pharma is going to give up billions in chemo drugs? I can see an accident waiting to happen.

  2. Cheers for this, been searching for "natural ketosis recipes" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Ever heard of – Leviwiy Ketogenic Kaiserism – (search on google ) ? Ive heard some unbelievable things about it and my cousin got cool results with it.

  3. Thanks for let us into Your life to such a sensitive degree. I just wanted to acknowledge what You've said with my expericences in keto.
I'm on ketogenic Diet 3 months ago. I had no cancer nor diabetes … only 18 kg overweight. BUT since I'm doing the diet I'm calm and feel myself more clever. I have more energy and started to gym again. It is a totally life-changing way of eating and the top of that I've lost 8 kgs without ever being hungry (eating bacon and cheese and nice fatty meats 🙂 )
Maybe You will be happy to hear that in my country (Hungary) it is getting quite a movement the use of ketogenic diet. There are people in FB group with diabetes epilepsy, cancer and all of them are satisfied with the results.

  4. What a beautiful story.. Thank you so much for this!

I do therapeutic ketogenic diet after I had my Stroke last November 22, 2016 and I had to start from from scratch — ABC’s, reading, writing and I needed speech therapy because I had Aphasia. I found Dr. Eric Berg on YouTube when I was searching for a better diet since my Stroke was due to AV Malformation and bad diet, I decided to try it.

After 8 months of speech therapy, I passed my tests from 77% to 97.5%; I can now see colors from my right eye; and I can now dream. Plus I lost 60 pounds on it. These are just some of the changes that improved because of keto. It’s amazing how the body heals!

I’m still on the Ketogenic diet and added intermittent fasting as well. I drink apple cider vinegar with lemon and I drink coconut oil every day.

  5. I've done Keto for 3 months feel years and years younger and looking far better and leaner. There is also some great success with the treatment of Alzheimer's. If there's is a predisposition to such problems in your family or you just want to look and feel better, do the research. To the lady in the video that was a great presentation my condolences for your loss and my total respect for your courage and efforts to help others.

  6. Brilliant speech. It moved me to tears. I've been on KETO diet since September 2019. I've noticed many health benefits of KETO and Intermittent Fasting. I intend to stay on it for the rest of my life. Prevention is much better than cure. We shouldn't wait until we get a diagnosis of potentially incurable illness. We should start today! Highly recommend it

  7. If I had known this when my 14 year old son was dx with rare pediatric sarcoma in 2010, we would have tried it. We were clueless and he was given very low odds of survival with stage 4. We let him eat what he wanted: loads of Mountain Dew. He died in 2012. Our oncologists had no dietary recommendations at all. I am now on a ketogenic diet myself and I am now a huge advocate of it, for many health reasons.

  8. What an amazing thing you have done with your pain. Bless your heart and Raffi’s life, which will no doubt lend itself to helping others extend and improve the quality of their, or a loved one’s, life. 🙏❤️

  9. Every cell in our body has between 1 and 4,000 mitochondria per cell. The mitochondria is where ATP is created. It's the body's energy currency. Without ATP the very cell itself cannot do anything, it needs energy. So when the mitochondria is dysfunctional, it will ferment rather than respirate. Healthy human cells will respirate oxygen using glucose or ketones, while cancer cells ferment glucose or glutamine, which is an amino acid. Those are the only two fermentable fuels that cancer can use. Glucose needs insulin in order to enter the cell to be used for energy production. Ketones do not need insulin to access the cell. Ketones freely enter all cells, including the brain! Glucose also causes inflammation, causing all of the inflammatory pathways to switch on. Diet is the number one defense, proactively or reactively!
